Bed bugs, as resilient as they are, are best known as hitchhikers. Among the plethora of options for travelling, they are very well known for travelling miles and miles using furniture, clothes, bags etc. Known to feed on blood every 5 days, they can survive for months to years without blood.
Here are few of the top-most precautions you can take to avoid a bed bug infestation-
1. Take steps against the bug bites
Do not casually take any bed bugs’ bite you might come across,onyour body or your family members’. Stay well educated about the signs of a bed bug bite and make sure educate your family as well on this important issue. Bed bugs’ bites are usually red in colour and often itchy. Get all the necessary assistance as required.
2. Look out for bugs in your pet’s bed
Just as a human bed is paradise for bed bugs, they also find an equally favorable environment in your pet’s bed. Cleaning your pet’s bed should become a part of your daily routine, just like your own bed. Since pet beds tend to be small, you should regularly wash its bed with the highest heat and dry settings.
3. Call for professional help
It’s not at all necessary to fight against bed bugs alone. You can always call for professional help to speed up the process of reducing the infestation. These trained professionals have the right tools and equipment to ensure that your house is completely free of bugs. 4. Get rid of clutter
Having clutter in your house makes it easier for bed bugs to become members of your family. Specially, get rid of the clutter against the walls on the floors. Furthermore, while bringing in any new addition to your furniture; do make sure to check it thoroughly before making it a new part of your home.
5. Don’t keep the mattresses bare
The mattresses should always be covered with suitable covers. Some encasements are zipped covers that can hold non-vinyl mattresses and box springs. Make sure that the cases are of good quality so that they are durable and resistant to tears. The zippers should not have any folds around them where there is a chance for bugs to inhabit.
6. Be careful not to bring bed bugs from public places
Do not make it easy for the bugs to enter your house. They can enter through your clothes, new furniture, or pets. Bed bugs can very easily travel with you,if you are less-than-hygienic travel methods. These parasitic bugs can also find haven in storage rooms and changing rooms. The cushions in the dressing rooms may also have bugs hidden in them. As you keep your clothes on those cushions, they might travel all the way from the dressing room to your house.
7. Don’t Panic
Eliminating bugs is a difficult process, though not an impossible one. Stay focused and do not panic. Also, do not make the mistake of throwing away your valuables in fear of being infested. Most of the items can be treated and saved for a bug-free future.
